 The
terror bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City on September
11, 2001 was an event that raised countless questions; investigations
and studies of it are by government and non-governmental bodies are
still going on. People want to know how it happened and what we can
do to prevent something similar from happening again.
But the event
touches our spirits too. As Christians we believe the mystery of the
Cross is found in those fiery towers. The Cross is everywhere, so how
can we find it there?
In this issue
of Compassion we turn to an eyewitness of the World Trade disaster for
guidance. Sister Maureen Skelly, a New York police chaplain, was involved
in the tragic events on September 11 and the period of recovery that
followed. Like those who witnessed the tragic event of Calvary, her
story describes the slow process one must make to discover of its hidden
wisdom.
The mystery
of the Cross touches our whole world and each individual life. And so
our eyes must search for it in many places. Fr. Kevin Dance sees it
at work in a world body like the United Nations. Fr.Raphael Amrhein
traces it in the fascinating figure of Saint Gemma Galgani. And Brandon
Nappi experiences it in the emerging movement of lay involvement in
the Church.
It is a blessed
mystery, when it is found.
