In the Company of the Saints
Like others
from the New Testament era, such as the apostles and evangelists, Mary
Magdalene's sainthood was an unofficial yet ecclesial canonization due
to her special role as a primary witness to the Resurrection and bearer
of this good news to the apostles. By the 12th century, there was widespread
devotion to her in the Western Church.
For St.Theresa
of Avila (+1584), the story of Mary Magdalene played an important role
in her conversion from spiritual indifference.
St.Bridget
of Sweden (+1373) wrote: "There are three saints I love above all:
Mary the mother of Jesus, St.John the Baptist, and Mary Magdalene.
From the Middle
Ages, Confraternities and groups under the patronage of St. Mary Magdalene
worked for the reform of prostitutes and troubled women throughout Europe.
She is the patroness of perfumeurs, hair-dressers, and glove-makers.
