The Passion
According to Luke
One
of the dominant images of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke is that of Jesus
as the Spirit-filled prophet. Luke begins Jesus' public ministry in
his hometown synagogue of Nazareth, opening the scroll to do the reading
from the text of Isaiah 61, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because
he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor...." (Lk 4:16-30).
That prophetic fire would drive Jesus throughout his ministry and
bring him to the climax of his mission in Jerusalem. Therefore, it
is not surprising that in Luke's Gospel Jesus faces his crucifixion
with the courageous fidelity and prophetic sense of justice that had
characterized his ministry all during the long journey from Galilee
to Jerusalem.
