The tradition of the Reformation

Christians of the Reformation rejected much of the visual tradition of the medieval Church with its indulgenced prayers and practices, yet they kept themes like the wounds of Christ, so strongly supported in the Scriptures, and promoted them in a new form -- music.

Five bleeding wounds, he bears,
Received on Calvary;
They pour effectual prayers,
They strongly speak for me;
Forgive him, O forgive! They cry,
Nor let that ransomed sinner die!"
--Charles Wesley
